The weather in Luxembourg is fairly moderate and temperate, and extreme conditions are rare. Winters can get cold, and summers are mild. Across the warmer months from June to September, you can expect pleasant average temperatures of between 57°F (14°C) and 66°F (19°C). Hot spells have become more frequent in recent years, and days above 86°F (30°C) are no longer unusual.
Luxembourg has two broad regions. The Oesling in the north is part of the Ardennes. It’s higher ground, and its climate is cooler and wetter, so snow falls there more often in winter. The Gutland is the lower-lying south, where the weather is milder, and it’s home to Luxembourg City.
From December to March, daytime temperatures are usually above freezing, although the nights are colder. January is the coldest month, and its overnight lows regularly drop below 32°F (0°C). Luxembourg has occasionally recorded lows of around 5°F (-15°C) in recent decades, although such cold snaps are rare.
Rain is common all year in Luxembourg, and the winter months are the greyest and windiest. Cloud cover is common even on dry days. In summer, you might catch the odd afternoon thunderstorm, although they’re not a daily event. In the warmer months, you’ll get roughly seven to eight hours of sunshine a day, and July is the sunniest of the lot.
